What we are doing

Our role is to represent the interests of consumers in the development of policy for the regulation of financial services.  Here we set out some of the current issues that the Panel is pursuing and what we’re doing about them.

We are looking to ensure that the needs of consumers remain at the heart of any changes that are made to the regulatory system at the FSA.

EU regulatory and legislative issues

In 2006 around seventy percent of changes to the FSA Handbook resulted from new EU requirements. The Consumer Panel's EU strategy aims to influence the development of EU financial services policymaking for the benefit of consumers.

The future regulation of consumer credit

The split in regulation between credit and other areas of financial services is confusing and illogical to consumers. The Panel is exploring ways to integrate the regulation of consumer credit into the new FSA (Financial Conduct Authority) FCA regime.

Consumer Panel work on the Mortgage Market Review

Given our concerns about the progress and adequacy of the FSA's Mortgage Market Review (MMR), we have urged the FSA to take more time to ensure its proposals deliver the intended consumer benefits.

Terms of reference

Panel members meet with FSA staff to regularly question their policy developments, as well as representing the FSCP at appropriate events
